Farming an Acre of Land
How many plants can you fit into 1 acre spaced at twelve inches apart?
Some land owners would like to use their vacant land to grow an urban garden, whether it is vegetables, fruit trees, or a Christmas tree farm. Spacing the plants 12 inches (or a foot) apart would give them enough space to grow and mature.
At 12" apart that would be one square foot of spacing for each plant, and there are 43,560 square feet in an acre so one would assume the answer to be 43,560 plants could fit in an acre of land given these specifications. However, this is a trick question and here is why.
Let’s assume this block (below) represents 16 square feet, which would make it 4 feet x 4 feet. About how many plants could be planted within the boundaries at 12” apart? Hint. The answer isn’t 16, because you can plant one where each line interests another line. The correct answer is 25 plants.

Example: In a rectangular shape that is 4’ x 6’ (24 square feet) we find that we could fit 35 plants at 12” apart.

For simplicity, notice that to get the answer to each of the questions above you can simply take the dimensions given, add +1, and multiply them together. So a property that measures 4’ x 4’ is changed to 5 x 5, which is 25 or 25 plants, and the same is true for 4’ x 6’ (5 x 7 = 35 plants).
Now we can answer our original question…
The question didn’t specify the size of the acre of land and the answer could vary depending on the dimensions of the acre, so we will have to make some assumptions to do this correctly. An acre of land is approximately 208’ x 208’ squared (the actual number is 208.71032557111303’), but the math isn’t as nice so let’s use a rectangular shaped acre of land measuring 132’ x 330’ in size (132’ x 330’ = 43,560) and also a parcel of land measuring 198’ x 220’ (198’ x 220’ = 43,560). Basically you could use any dimension that divides nicely into 43,560 since the question didn’t specify.
If you had a property that was 132’ x 330’ in size you would multiply 133 x 331 and you would get 44,023 or 44,023 plants that could be planted in an acre of land at these dimensions.
And if you had a property that measured 198’ x 220’ in size you would multiply 199 x 221 and get only 43,979 plants, slightly less than the previous example, that could be planted in an acre using these dimensions.
With this information we hope that you will be better able to find the right size parcel of land for your specific needs.
